Cedar Rapids Public Library

The City of Cedar Rapids weathered the storm – are you up to the leadership challenge of rebuilding library programs and services and taking library services to the next level?

Are you excited by the idea of planning for a new main library with cutting edge services and technology?

If so, then you may be the candidate we’re seeking…………

The Cedar Rapids Public Library seeks a library director who is a dynamic, outgoing, and creative problem solver to provide strategic vision and leadership. The director will work with an excellent staff, who as a team won the Library Journal Librarian of the Year Award. The successful candidate will be a leader who excels at building partnerships, empowering staff, and collaborating with other area agencies in a politically savvy environment; a librarian who can articulate, support, and promote the library’s mission to provide a complete spectrum of information to the community through a variety of materials, programs, appropriate technology, and a well-trained staff.

The Cedar Rapids Public Library serves a population of over 132,000. The staff consists of 71employees (51.55 FTEs), and the library’s annual revenues exceed $3,989,807. As the Library plans for the future, it now provides services through a space in the Westdale Shopping Mall and has just signed a lease for a 2,277 square feet space downtown. The library is a focal point of the community, with solid public support. As a result of the 2008 flood, the Library and the City have formed a stronger partnership and the libraries in surrounding communities have offered extensive support. The City of Cedar Rapids offers an excellent quality of life with three four-year colleges and the University of Iowa within 30 miles. There is a robust professional community that strongly supports the library.

Minimum Qualifications : MLS from an ALA-accredited library education program, plus 5 years professional experience with demonstrated management ability in administration, budgeting, planning, fundraising, and supervision. The successful candidate will have a strong philosophy of customer service, the ability to attract and maintain a talented staff, and embrace the library’s values, including innovation, trust, staff participation, and team management. Experience with facilities projects and building programs preferred.

Salary: Minimum $95,000, depending on qualifications.
